SIS-PIK MUN 2018 – New Experiences and Opportunities

“Experience is the hardest kind of teacher. It gives you the test first and the lesson afterward.” – Oscar Wilde.

Following up a successful Model United Nations (MUN) conference back in 2016, 123 students from 13 different school, having thoroughly researched key issues and reviewed briefings prepared by out incredible SIS-PIK MUN committee, congregated in SIS-PIK for a MUN conference on 9th March 2018.

MUN is a simulation of the United Nations work sessions where delegates would be placed into committees and assigned countries to represent; they will have to work faithfully, respecting the assigned country’s standpoint. MUN has these following goals:

  1. To provide a deeper understanding of multilateral diplomacy.
  2. To strengthen negotiating and leadership skill.
  3. To improve the ability to anticipate evolving scenarios of complex issues.

Throughout the conference, delegates will have to face and solve controversial political, social and economic issues, ranging from both regional and global scale. Despite the difference in beliefs, ideas and point of views, delegates will have to cooperate and work with each other to write resolutions that would be placed up for voting; where majority vote is required for a resolution to pass. Skills such as public speaking, quick-thinking and networking are nurtured and garnered. The committee and topics being offered this year are as followed:

Beginner Committee:

  1. United Nations Environment Program – Ocean Pollution
  2. United Nations High Commission for Refugees – The Rohingya Refugee Crisis

Non-beginner Committee:

  1. United Nations Security Council – North Korea’s Security Threat
  2. United Nations Human Rights Council – Human Trafficking and Modern Day Slavery
  3. World Health Organization – Methods to Curb Antibiotic Resistance

At the end of the conference, delegates have not only gain a more nuanced understanding on how the United Nations work, but also have built relationships with people within and out of their committee. The timespan of a day might be a very short period of time, but it’s safe to say that everyone has gone beyond their limit.

SIS-PIK MUN 2018 conference has definitely been a success and our SIS-PIK MUN committee would like to present our greatest gratitude to all our participants, parents, teachers, sponsors and everyone else who have made this conference possible and successful.

Regardless whether the opportunities are limited or abundant, having the confidence to seize even the smallest of opportunities is the most important. Seize hold of the opportunities and savor the experiences! See you all next year!
